On Thursday 24th March, four of our officials, Tom Trainor (Belfast), Louise O’Toole (Waterford), Mariusz Landos (Dublin) and Tommy Brosnan (Kerry) head to Sodertalje, Sweden to take part in the prestigious Scania Cup 2016.
With over 140 teams registered from all over Europe, the tournament promises to continue to be one of Europe’s premier underage tournaments.
The challenges of refereeing high quality games in a different country, in new arena’s and with officials they have never met before will test our officials throughout. They will be joined for the four days by Tony Burke FIBA who will act as an observer at the tournament.
This opportunity is part funded by the officials themselves on top of monies generated from ticket sales in the Basketball Ireland’s National Draw, which all four officials participated in.
We will have more opportunities as a result of the monies generated through ticket sales, for other officials to travel abroad and experience a different type of basketball than currently on offer in Ireland.
Best of luck to all referees,
FIBA National Instructor
